The first man sinned...
for he did not know
his own soul.
- Rabbi Abrahm Isaac Kook
Somewhere in the last 200 years, modern Jewish practice lost its mystical connection. With industrialization, the elevation of science, the Holocaust, and the proliferation of Western materialism, Judaism began to assimilate, and its spiritual ideas and practices became harder to access. And, for many of us who grew up in the later portion of the 20th century, Judaism became dry and stale.
Though there are clear sociological reasons why the metaphysical musings of our forefathers and mothers were sent underground, it seems that now, at the dawn of a new age, we are called to re-learn this forgotten material.
Spiritually conscious Judaism can assist us in two ways...
First, it can help us in re-membering who we really are as individuals. Through kavannah (awareness), we can shed our masks and become the divine beings that we were meant to be. And, once we are on our most productive path, we become more energized to be instrumental in tikkun olam (repair of the world).
Second, Jewish mystical and spiritual material can re-invigorate our connection to Judaism. Despite intermarriage and alienation, we can renew ancient traditions and re-create a Judaism that inspires all generations.
We are all pieces of the whole, independent, yet interconnected.
We are fragments of uniqueness that are essential to the puzzle.
We are shards of light that reflect the goodness of the one.
We are bits of universal energy, attracting what is essential to our growth.
We are particles of the everlasting, shining in awesome glory.
We are all sparks of God, seeking return to the eternal flame.
